Grange Insurance
Grange Insurance got its start in 1930 when an Ohio farmer named John Haaf was frustrated after his auto insurance premium went up without explanation. As a member of the Ohio State Grange, an agriculture-based group, he shared the idea of offering low-cost auto insurance to fellow members. By March 1935, Grange Mutual Casualty Company was officially formed as a mutual insurance company headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. In 1955, Grange became a multi-line company by adding fire insurance, and a few years later the Board of Directors voted to expand the customer base beyond Ohio State Grange members and beyond Ohio.
Today, Grange is a successful mid-sized insurer still based in Columbus, Ohio, offering auto, home, renters, condo, and business insurance through a network of independent agents. In 2003, for the first time ever, Grange topped more than $1 billion in annual premium, and the company has continued to write over $1 billion in annual premium every year since. Grange has held an “A” Excellent rating from A.M. Best for over 50 years, reflecting its long-standing financial strength. The company is also known for its community commitment, donating $1 million to nonprofits for COVID-19 relief and an additional $1 million to advance racial equality and support health and human services in 2021.
